*Beat Blemishes Before they Bloom!
What can I do when I have one of those feel-it-starting zits? Is there any way to prevent it from turning into a huge pimple?

That bothersome bump is a blockage of bacteria and oil trapped beneath the top layers of skin that has yet to form a pimple. To battle a blemish-to-be, wash with a cleanser that contains glycolic acid or salicylic acid, which will slough off the top skin cells and clear out the dirt and oil underneath, says Doris J. Day, M.D., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York University Medical Center. Follow up with an AHA rich toner to get rid of excess grime; we recommend Nutrient Toner by Physician's Choice. Then apply a spot treatment containing salicylic acid twice a day; try Jan Marini's Bioglycolic Acne Gel (Containing Bioglycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid). Use a moisturizer containing salicylic acid to further fight acne while hydrating the skin. You can also add a twice-daily application of a .5% percent hydrocortisone cream such as Apres Peel Balm to your routine to reduce inflammation.

*Bumps Around your Eyes
I have whiteheads around my eyes. How can I get rid of them?

Warning: Your eye area is extremely sensitive, so taking action against any pimple in the proximity could be dangerous. If it's around the lash line or on the lid, see your ophthalmologist right away because you could have a cold sore or infection. If the whiteheads are around the temples and upper cheeks, they may be just regular pimples (if the white tip is filled with pus) or a blocked oil gland below the skin's surface (which feels very hard), says Harvey Jay, M.D., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College. You can try putting a warm compress on it to help the pimple drain, and swipe the area with a gentle alcohol and acid free toner to keep it clean and soothed; try Oil Neutralizing Astringent. Don't use an acne solution since the acids could burn your eyes' fragile skin. To be rid of the bumps for good, see your esthetician or dermatologist.

*Bye Bye Blackheads
Everyone tells me how cute the freckles on my nose are, but the problem is, they're blackheads that I've had for years. No matter how much I wash, nothing helps. What should I do?

Blackheads form when oil, makeup, dirt, and dead skin cells get trapped deep within large pores. Although you can't do much to reduce pore size, you can minimize the amount of gunk that gets clogged in them.
First, make sure you use only oil-free products -- that includes foundations, sunscreens, and moisturizers. Also, after washing your face at night, retexturize sensitive facial skin to a new smoothness with this gentle gommage that easily lifts away unwanted dead skin cells; very popular is our
Ultra Gentle Green Tea Gommage. Simply washing will clean your complexion but, unfortunately, isn't powerful enough to banish blackheads. To do some serious purging and pore refining, use an exfoliant cleanser (very popular is the Foaming Facial Refiner) and a pore refining toner every morning and night. A & C Synergy Serum assists in achieving and maintaining total skin clarity. If a stronger medication is desired (for less sensitive skin), the prime choice is Peter Thomas Roth’s AHA/BHA Acne Clearing Gel. This product penetrates pores which eliminates, clears up and prevents the development of new whiteheads, blackheads, and acne blemishes, while allowing the skin to heal.
If these skin-clearing solutions don’t work, ask your esthetician for a personal skin evaluation and advice.

*Camouflage a Cold
I have a horrible cold that's making my nose red and lips chapped. I look awful! What can I do to hide it?

The first step in masking a flu face is to slough off any dry flakes. To do this, gently rub your nose and lips with a washcloth soaked in warm water and a hydrating facial cleanser. Next, spot-apply a heavy-duty moisturizer to dry, sore areas around your nose and on the corners of your mouth. To mask any ruddy, blotchy patches, dab a yellow-tone concealer (it neutralizes red marks) over the areas in question. Finish with a dusting of yellow-based pressed powder over trouble spots. Also, heal your chapped lips by keeping them continually hydrated with a lip balm like C-ESTA (Containing DAE Complex) or an ultra-moisturizing lipstick. Stay hydrated by increasing your H20 intake! Now you're ready to apply your makeup as usual.

*Camouflage that Pimply Pest!
How do you conceal a pimple? I went on a date, and a zit on my chin was so big, he couldn't stop staring at it.

After washing your skin with a good oil-grabber such as DuBunne's Pore Clearing Cleanser, the first step to save you from a complexion pest is to dab on a bit of Rescue Gel to take down the redness and size of the pimple.
Next, use a concealer that exactly matches your skin tone, says Sonia Kashuk, makeup artist to superb-looking celebs like Ashley Judd and Salma Hayek. "If you use a concealer that's too pale, you'll end up highlighting the problem instead of hiding it," says Kashuk. Her blemish-masking technique: Using your fingertip, repeatedly dab a non-comedogenic cream concealer just on top of the pimple. This patting action -- versus rubbing or brushing -- layers the cover-up exactly where needed and enables it to adhere better. Next, sweep a translucent loose powder over the area for long-wearing results. When applying foundation to the rest of your face, avoid the already-tended trouble spot or you'll just rub off the concealer.

*Dry Skin Relief
I have really dry patches all over my body. How can I make them smooth?

Try this routine to heal your dry epidermis. First of all, limit your shower time since water is drying, and avoid very hot showers. Wash with a moisturizing cleanser, and avoid soap and foaming products. (Most cleansers with foaming action contain detergent, which is extremely drying to the skin.) Immediately after your shower, apply a cream moisturizer to your body while you're still damp to trap the water. For a dry face, apply Moisture Infusion Creme Masque, rinsing away when it becomes transparent. Before bed, give your extra-dry areas another thirst-quenching treatment by applying a moisturizer like Peter Thomas Roth's AHA 12% Body Lotion containing alpha-hydroxy acids, which helps remove dead dry skin and hydrate the new skin beneath. If you don't see improvement after a week or two, see your esthetician or dermatologist for a stronger solution.

*Herbal vs. Chemical Acne Antidotes
Does tea-tree oil really clear up pimples?

The oil of the Australian tea tree contains terpinen-4-ol, an antibacterial agent that kills zit-causing bacteria. It also acts as a solvent, so it can stop oily matter from clogging up sebaceous glands and forming pimples. A recent study compared 5 percent tea-tree-oil gel to 5 percent benzoyl peroxide (a common blemish fighter) in a treatment of mild to moderate acne. "It was found that both worked equally well to get rid of whiteheads and blackheads," says Jules S. Abadi, a New York City dermatologist. Plus, tea-tree oil has none of the side effects -- such as dryness -- of chemical acne antidotes. It should be noted that the tea-tree oil did take a bit longer to work than the benzoyl peroxide. "Tea-tree oil is good for all skin types -- oily, normal, and dry," says Charles Friedman, scientific director of Burt's Bees Skincare. Our favorite zit-zapper spiked with tea-tree oil: Shine Free Solution.

*Persistent Pimple Rx
Why do I always get this one zit in the same place?

Your bothersome blemish is a common complexion woe, says Mary P. Lupo, a New Orleans dermatologist. One reason a pimple keeps popping up in the same place is that the pore it developed in is damaged -- usually the result of too much picking or squeezing. Prodding at a pimple can loosen the cell lining of the pore and cause the clogged oil to slip deeper into the skin, creating an inflammatory reaction. Resist the temptation to zealously squeeze your zit. Instead, ice it for five minutes two or three times a day to decrease swelling, and apply a topical antibiotic containing benzoyl peroxide such as BPO Gel 10%, Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Medication twice a day. At night, apply a drying agent containing salicylic acid, camphor, or sulfur after dabbing on the topical antibiotic. Very effective is Bio Clear (Containing Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid.

*Picked and Squeezed, Help Please!
I just picked a pimple, and now it's an embarrassing red bump. Will it leave a scar?

“Squeezing a blemish irritates skin and increases blood supply to the area, creating a raised red spot", says Debra Jaliman, an NYC dermatologist. But redness doesn't have to mean scarring, especially if you follow these tips: During the day, wear an oil-free sunscreen all over, especially on your scarlet spot. "The sun will only make the mark darker," says Dr. Jaliman. She recommends a sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays (look for microfine zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or Parsol 1789 on the ingredients list). Ultra Lite Oil Free Sunblock (SPF 30) by Peter Thomas Roth gets the job done while feeling silky and light. At night, after removing makeup, apply a 2-percent hydrocortisone cream with pigment control. A popular favorite for quick return to natural color and decreased inflammation is Pigment Gel – PHaze 13 by Physician’s Choice. A week of these tactics should lighten the spot. But if major inflammation persists, see your dermatologist for a cortisone injection (about $30). If the redness lasts longer than 10 days, your picking may have broken blood vessels, causing a permanent mark. In this case, the best bet is to consult with your esthetician to see if persistence with a particular product is right, or if something more aggressive such as a Microdermabrasion Corrective Facial or a Pigment Control Peel is necessary.

*Pimple Scar Rx
Help! Every time I get a zit, I end up with a red or brown mark on my face. They eventually fade away, but it can take weeks. What should I do?

It's not uncommon for a blemish to leave an unsightly spot in its place. And usually, the longer the blemish was there, the longer the red mark will linger or even develop into a permanent discoloration. So prevent post-pimple problems by treating acne eruptions ASAP. Avoid picking or squeezing the spot, which can cause inflammation and redness, and use a bioglycolic and salicylic acid based product to dry out the blemish; try Jan Marini's Bioglycolic Acne Gel (Containing BioGlycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid. If, despite your best efforts, a red or brown mark still materializes, try using a pigment control spot treatment. Also be sure to protect your skin from the sun, since UV rays will darken the discoloration.

*The Pore-Shrinking Scoop
My pores seem bigger in the summer. How can I make them less noticeable?

First of all, you're not imagining things -- pores actually do get bigger in hot weather. Here's why: The heat increases perspiration and revs up your skin's oil-making machinery, which in turn makes pores work overtime to release the excess sweat and sebum. Technically, pores don't open and close, but they can change size by 10 to 20 percent depending on the amount of material that's coming out of them.
When pores are overtaxed, it's also easy for them to become clogged, causing blemishes. Start using a gentle scrub twice daily after cleansing that contains alpha- (AHA) and beta-hydroxy (BHA) acids to deep-clean (and thereby shrink) each pore. We recommend the
Gentle Exfoliant - Phaze 4 by Physician’s Choice. Follow with a toner for your skin type to tighten pores further. In the morning, also use a light-reflecting lotion to make skin appear pore-less. Try Perfect Skin Line-Diffusing Emulsion.

*Red-Nose Rx
Is there any way to get rid of the redness that plagues my nose in winter?

Braving the harsh winter weather elements can cause your nose to glow. Cold temperatures and gusty winds constrict blood vessels in the extremities to conserve energy, making your nose white. When you come inside and warm up, extra blood rushes to your cheeks and nose, inducing redness, dryness, and increased sensitivity. But feel free to endeavor and adventure with the help of an excellent weather guard such as Skin Defense Cream.
To help prevent a beet-red beak, wear a stylish scarf bundled around your face when you're outdoors. Soothe weather-beaten skin by sticking to a mild cleanser morning and night such as Peter Thomas Roth’s Sensitive Skin Cleanser. During the day, be sure to sport an oil-free moisturizer with sunscreen, since the sun can aggravate a chapped condition. Jan Marini cares for sensitive skin in the sun with Bioglycolic Lotion APF 15.
To camouflage a scarlet schnoz: Smooth on a green-tinted powder (to neutralize redness), followed by a concealer that matches your skin tone, says Ross Burton, a New York City makeup artist. Try Perfect Skin Line Diffusing Emulsion to bring your natural color back. If your nose remains red for more than a week to 10 days, see your dermatologist to make sure you're not suffering from a more severe skin condition.

*Salvage Winter Skin
I have oily skin, but in cold weather it gets dry and flaky. Moisturizer just makes my face break out. What should I do?

Winter can do a double whammy to almost anyone's skin. Dry, frigid outdoor weather and overheated indoor environments together can cause even the oiliest skin types to become stripped of moisture, itchy, and flaky. To make matters worse, slicking on a thick, oil-based moisturizer can result in clogged pores and acne flare-ups.
Here, several tricks to set your skin straight: First, use an exfoliating facial wash once a week to slough off flakes.
The Ultimate Scrub will gently buff away fine lines, and flaky skin, and even help slow signs of aging with gentle micrograins suspended in a moisturizing cleansing cream. During the rest of the week, use a gentle, fragrance-free nondrying cleanser. Try Bio Clean, Jan Marini’s non-glycolic acid cleanser with hydration benefits. Always rinse in lukewarm water -- hot water robs the skin of much-needed moisture. Pat your skin dry -- rubbing increases skin irritation -- with a soft washcloth. Finally, protect your sensitive skin with a serum such as Calming Bio-Lipid Repair Fluid, and spot-apply an oil-free moisturizing lotion only on dry patches to avoid breakouts. We recommend Skin Defense Creme

*Scaly Skin Soothed
The skin around my cheeks and right under my nose is flaky and sometimes even looks like boogers! How can I get rid of it?

A scaly complexion is a beauty bummer, but thankfully, it's simple to cure. "Flaky skin is usually a condition called seborrheic dermatitis, which occurs when skin is severely dry and dead cells slough off too rapidly around the nose, eyebrows, ears, and scalp," says Rosemarie Ingleton, a dermatologist in New York City. Use a moisturizer containing progesterone (which deeply hydrates skin) twice a day to soothe dry skin in about two days; try Apres Peel Balm with Progesterone. And finally your moisturizer can be more effective with Moisture Boost Hydragel which blends with your normal moisturizer instantly infusing dehydrated skin with hours of comforting moisture! If the area is red and irritated, also use a skin calming serum such as Instant Calm Green Tea Complex to get your skin back to its silky and smooth best.

*The Scoop on Anti-Wrinkle Creams
I'm only 25, but I notice fine lines when I smile. Is it too early to use anti-wrinkle creams?

Everyday facial movements like smiling cause faint lines to surface and deepen into wrinkles over time. If you start to battle these lines from the get-go, you can reduce them and prevent more from forming, says Patricia K. Farris, a New Orleans dermatologist. Here's how: On alternating mornings, apply a lotion such as AHA Ceramide Hydrating Repair Gel which contains both alpha hydroxy acid and vitamin C. AHAs reduce lines by exfoliating damaged skin. Vitamin C's antioxidant properties help prevent new lines. Before bed, apply a cream containing retinol, a pure form of vitamin A that helps build new collagen and stops existing collagen from collapsing and causing wrinkles; we recommend Factor-A Lotion (Containing All-Trans-Retinol) by Jan Marini. If you're seeing those lines only around your eyes, try AHA / Vitamin C Eye Crème Gel. Sun exposure accelerates the aging process, so wear a broad-spectrum SPF 15 sunscreen daily. Jan Marini's Bioglycolic Facial Lotion SPF 15 (Containing Glycolic Acid) will give superior sun protection while assisting in maintaining a silky smooth appearing texture.

*SPF at Night?
Is it okay to wear a face cream that has SPF to bed?

Yes. While you obviously don't need sun protection when you're sleeping, ingredients that block UV rays -- like octyl methoxycinnamate, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and parsol 1789 -- will not damage your skin, says Dr. David J. Leffell, chief dermatologic surgeon at the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., and author of Total Skin. Plus, it's impossible for your skin to develop an immunity to sunscreen, so slather it on as often as you like. If you're prone to breakouts, be sure to use an oil-free non-comedogenic formula.

*Simple PM Skin Care
I'm often too tired to wash my face at night. What's the bare minimum I need to do?

Even when you're partying past bedtime or pulling a late night at the office, it's essential to cleanse your face thoroughly before you hit the hay. "You need to remove makeup and daily grime from your face to avoid clogged pores and breakouts," says Debra Wattenberg, an NYC dermatologist. But don't fret -- this task can be done in seconds. Just use a multipurpose cleanser that'll whisk away dirt, oil, and even hard-to-remove makeup like waterproof mascara all at once. Pure and Simple Cleansing Lotion is quick to remove all make-up and excess oils for a soap and water "squeaky clean" feel without dehydration.

*Spontaneous Overnighter? Spontaneous Skin Care Solutions!
I hate toting all my primping products to my beau's house. Can I raid his medicine cabinet?

Go to your guy's place with a lighter load, because some of his grooming staples are easily transformed into a feminine beauty routine, says New Jersey dermatologist Saida Baxt. Here, her best sleepover beauty-survival suggestions:

  • Remove your eye makeup with Vaseline or a few drops of olive oil on toilet paper. Both banish mascara without irritation.
  • Wash your face with his hand soap -- but dilute it first by foaming it in your hands. Apply the foam to your already moistened skin with a wet washcloth.
  • If you have oily skin, his aftershave works as a post-cleansing toner. It has a witch hazel or astringent base, which will gobble excess oil. If you have sensitive skin, dilute it with water.
  • Substitute his sunscreen for moisturizer. Since most but not all suntan lotions are non-comedogenic (they don't clog pores), you probably won't have to worry about breakouts. Just be sure to look for one that says "oil-free" on the label.
For a quick zit-zapper, seek out some rubbing alcohol. Put a small amount on a washcloth and dab on pimples to dry them.

*Stay Put SPF?
My sunscreen always runs and burns my eyes while I'm jogging outdoors. Is there any solution?

Fear not: Armed with a few tips, you can be tear-free as you hit the paths in the park. There are two types of sun protection: chemical formulas (which absorb the sun's rays before they hit your skin) and physical sunscreens (reflecting rays so they bounce off skin).
For the least amount of eye irritation, pick a physical block, suggests Mary Lupo, a dermatologist in New Orleans. Physical sun protectants (the main ingredients to look for on packaging are titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) adhere better to the skin than the chemical kind (octyl methoxycinnamate) and won't run as easily. If they do, they won't sting since they're chemical-free. Excellent daily protection for anyone is
Titanium Dioxide Sunblock SPF 15 which is kind to sensitive skin. Be sure to let the formula dry before you head out the door, to further minimize run potential.

*Ultimate Zit Zap Tips
Help! I have a date tomorrow, but a huge, red pimple just popped up. How can I get rid of it quickly?

First, take a closer look at that bump: Is it just on the surface of the skin, or is it the underground cystic variety that feels sore when you press it? If it's a superficial eruption, after cleansing your face for the evening, leave the Zinc & Sulfur Masque on for 15 Minutes. When the masque is dry, rinse well with warm water and pat your face dry. Then, just before bedtime, spot treat by leaving on an impurity and oil eating acne medication such as BPO 10% (Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Medication which will absorb deep into the skin to dry out the zit feeding oils.
If the area is still reddish in the morning after you've gently washed off the masque, dab on a green-toned concealer to counteract ruddiness, then pat the surrounding area with pressed powder. If, alas, you're stuck with a deep cystic pimple, the only quick-fix remedy is to have your dermatologist inject it with cortisone (for about $30) to immediately reduce redness and shrink it, says Stuart H. Kaplan, a Beverly Hills, California, dermatologist. Right before your date cover up any remaining spot with the same concealing tactics mentioned above.

*Wrinkles Be Gone
I'm only 25, but I have fine lines around my eyes and forehead. Are they wrinkles?

Chances are, those little lines are the beginnings of wrinkles, but don't freak out. "At your age, newfound wrinkles are most likely the result of either dehydration and/or mild sun damage and can be reversed rather quickly," says NYC dermatologist Zoe Draelos. The first step in fighting back: Start a moisture-boosting skin regimen.
Every morning and night, use a mild foaming cleanser that washes away dirt but leaves behind some natural oils to keep skin soft and smooth. Try
Moisture Protecting Cleansing Lotion, to soften skin, dissolve makeup and other impurities in seconds with the benefits of the rich natural oils of kukui, jojoba and green tea. Next, apply a lightweight silicone-based moisturizing lotion, which binds water to skin. Calming Bio Lipid Repair Fluid’s targeted antioxidants control signs of aging that appear earlier than normal in sensitive skin by moisturizing skin deeply.
If you still have a few lingering fine lines after a few days, you may have a layer of sun-damaged skin that needs to be sloughed off. The Anti Oxidant Peel for tired, sluggish skin in need of cellular turnover may set you on the right path. Your first Skin Consultation is FREE at DuBunne!
For home exfoliation, after washing your face, remove troublesome dead skin cells one to three times a week with Refining Grains. Follow with an SPF 15 moisturizer. At night, use a vitamin-C serum like C Cream (15% C) to help further smooth fine lines.
